Best Brake Upgrades for the Razor MX500 (and MX650)
Why Upgrade Your Razor MX500 or MX650 Brakes?
The Razor MX500 and MX650 are some of the most popular electric dirt bikes on the market — and for good reason. They're fast, fun, and surprisingly capable. But the stock braking system is built to a price point, and once you start riding harder or adding weight (bigger riders, cargo, or speed mods), you'll notice the limits quickly.
A brake upgrade is one of the highest-value modifications you can make. Better stopping power means more confidence, shorter stopping distances, and a safer ride for everyone.
Understanding the Stock Brake Setup
Both the MX500 and MX650 use a mechanical disc brake system at the rear and a drum or disc setup at the front depending on the model year. The levers, cables, and calipers are functional but leave room for improvement in feel and modulation.
Top Brake Upgrades to Consider
1. Brake Pads
The easiest and most affordable upgrade. Aftermarket sintered or semi-metallic pads offer significantly better bite and heat resistance compared to stock organic pads. This is the first thing we recommend to any MX500/MX650 owner.
2. Brake Levers
Stock levers are plastic and can flex under hard braking. Aluminum aftermarket levers provide a more direct feel and are far more durable. Look for adjustable reach levers if you have smaller hands or want a more ergonomic setup.
3. Brake Cables
Frayed or stretched cables are a common issue on used MX500s. Replacing with a stainless-lined cable dramatically improves pull feel and consistency. This is a cheap fix that makes a big difference.
4. Rotor Upgrade (MX650)
If you're on an MX650 and riding aggressively, a larger or higher-quality rotor can improve heat dissipation and braking consistency on longer descents or repeated stops.
Installation Tips
- Always bed in new brake pads before riding hard — do 10–15 moderate stops from 15 mph to seat the pads properly.
- Check cable tension after installation and re-adjust after the first few rides as cables stretch.
- Inspect the caliper mounting bolts and make sure they're torqued correctly — loose calipers cause brake fade and noise.
